# How to type the IN bigram

IN is a compact right-hand handoff. On standard QWERTY, your right middle finger presses I on the top row, then your right index finger presses N on the bottom row. N sits down and left of I, but two fingers share the sequence.

## IN crosses two rows without changing hands

IN moves from the right middle finger on the top row to the right index finger on the bottom row. Words containing IN account for about 8.55% of the frequency total for retained lowercase ASCII entries in wordfreq’s English large list, which gives you many contexts for checking that same down-left path.

## 1\. Start on I and land on N

Use the home-row anchors: your middle finger leaves K for I, then your index finger leaves J for N.

Type I with your right middle finger, then N with your right index finger. This is a one-hand sequence movement on a standard QWERTY keyboard.

The useful reference is the change of row. Finish I with the middle finger, then let the index finger land on N below and to the left. The whole hand does not need to lunge towards the bottom row. 

## 2\. Check the path, not one isolated key

A correct I and a correct N do not tell you whether the path between them is smooth. Compare _into_, _think_, and _being_. The surrounding letters change, but the top-to-bottom-row movement remains available for comparison.

The everyday estimate uses the English large list from [wordfreq 3.1.1](https://pypi.org/project/wordfreq/3.1.1/). PeakTock kept alphabetic English entries, added their estimated frequencies, and compared words containing IN with the full set. The list combines several text domains and is not a current census of English use, so 8.55% is a dataset estimate rather than a universal constant. 

The reference count checks lowercase alphabetic entries in the [Letterpress-derived word list](https://github.com/words/an-array-of-english-words)used to build PeakTock’s bundled drill index. It found 49,082 of 274,937 entries containing IN. Dictionary sizes and inclusion rules differ, so this number describes PeakTock’s reference list, not everyday word use.

## 3\. Find IN at the start and middle

Word position changes how your right hand enters and leaves the pair. _Into_ begins with IN, while _find_ and _think_ place it between other letters. The down-left I-to-N path stays fixed.

Use _in_ as the shortest reference. Then move IN through the word: start with _into_, then place it inside _find_, _think_, _being_, and _something_. 

## 4\. Separate a row-crossing delay from a weak key

Compare directions and neighbours before you name the problem. If I then N  is slow but other pairs using Iand N are steady, keep the practice target on this down-left transition. One run is not enough to assign a cause.

## 5\. Build an even I-to-N path

**Move the pair through five word contexts** 
1. in
2. into
3. find
4. think
5. something

**Observe:** does the index finger reach N without pulling the middle finger or the whole hand away from its next position? 

**Next:** use the exact drill if the down-left path remains uneven across several words. Compare other I and N pairs when the delay follows one key instead of this path.
